Thanks to my father, I am a huge Billy Joel fan. I can remember growing up listening to his songs and knowing all of the lyrics. There are so many good songs that it’s hard to pick a favorite. Lately though, I’ve been able to relate to one particular song called Vienna.
Vienna can be seen as the anthem for those in the transitional phases of their lives. The song asks the overambitious child to slow down, relax and remember that “Vienna waits for you.” The lyrics paint a much more realistic picture of growing up, reminding young adults that not everything will go their way. It also provides a bigger picture of life; that it is more than constantly working and running around relentlessly trying to get everything accomplished in a single day. Stop second-guessing yourself, take a breath and keep going.
I’ve listened to the song since I was about 10. Now, the lyrics resonate with me more than ever. As a young adult about to start the next phase of my life, I typically get too caught up in minor details, forgetting the bigger picture. It’s hard for me to slow down when I always feel like there’s something I should be doing to keep bettering myself. Every time I hear this song, I’m reminded to stop and enjoy life’s moments before they pass me by.
I know most people are consumed by their jobs or by their relationships. Many of us get caught up in the pointless drama and forget the little things that really matter. On this Motivation Monday, we all need to slow down and remember “Vienna waits for you.”
